<h2>Name</h2>
<p>"Nuh" is the name of this Surah as well as the title of its subject matter, for in it, from beginning to the end, the story of the Prophet Noah has been related.</p>
<h2>Period of Revelation</h2>
<p>This also is one of the earliest Surahs to be revealed at Makkah, but the internal evidence of its subject matter shows that it was sent down in the period when opposition to the Holy Prophet's message of Islam by the disbelievers of Makkah had grown very strong and active.</p>
<h2>Theme and Subject</h2>
<p>In this surah the story of the Prophet Noah has not been related only for the sake of story telling, but its object is to warn the disbelievers of Makkah, so as to say:"You, O people of Makkah, are adopting towards Muhammad (upon whom be Allah's peace and blessings) the same attitude as the people of the Prophet Noah had adopted towards him; if you do not change this attitude, you too would meet with the same end." This had not been said in so many words anywhere in the Surah, but in the background of the conditions under which this story was narrated to the people of Makkah, this subject itself became obvious.</p>
<p><a href=/71/2-4>vv. 2-4</a> briefly explain how he began his mission and what he preached.</p>
<p>Then after suffering hardships and troubles in the way of preaching his mission for ages the report that he made to his Lord has been given in <a href=/71/5-20>vv. 5-20</a>. In it he states how he had been trying to bring his people to the right path and how his people had stubbornly opposed him.</p>
<p>After this, the Prophet Noah's final submission has been recorded in <a href=/71/21-24>vv. 21-24</a>, in which he prays to his Lord, saying: "These people have rejected my invitation: they are blindly following their chiefs, who have devised a tremendous plot of deceit and cunning. Time now has come when these people should be deprived of every grace to accept guidance." This was not an expression of impatience by the Prophet Noah, but when after having preached his message under extremely trying circumstances for centuries be became utterly disappointed with his people, he formed the opinion that no chance whatever was left of their coming to the right path. His this opinion fully conformed to Allah's own decision. Thus, in the <a href=/71/25>next verse (25)</a>, it has been said: "The torment of Allah descended on those people because of their misdeeds."</p>
<p>In the concluding verse, the Prophet Noah's supplication that he made to his Lord, right at the time the torment descended, has been recorded. In it he prays for his own and for all the believers' forgiveness, and makes a submission to Allah to the effect: "Do not leave any of the disbelievers alive on the earth, for they have become utterly devoid of every good: they will not beget any but disbelieving and wicked descendants."</p>
<p>While studying this Surah one should keep in view the details of the Prophet Noah's story which have been given in the Qur'an above. For this see <a href=/7/59-64>Al-Araf: 59-64</a>, <a href=/10/71-73>Yunus: 71-73</a>, <a href=/11/25-49>Hud: 25-49</a>, <a href=/23/23-31>Al-Mu'minun: 23-31</a>, <a href=/26/105-122>Ash- Shua'ra: 105-122</a>, <a href=/29/14-15>Al-Ankabut: 14-15</a>, <a href=/37/75-82>As-Saaffat: 75-82</a>, <a href=/54/9-16>Al-Qamar: 9-16</a>.</p>

Surah As-Sajdah · The Prostration

  1. Ayah 1

    A. L. M.

  2. Ayah 2

(This is) the Revelation of the Book in which there is no doubt,- from the Lord of the Worlds.

  3. Ayah 3

Or do they say, "He has forged it"? Nay, it is the Truth from thy Lord, that thou mayest admonish a people to whom no warner has come before thee: in order that they may receive guidance.

  4. Ayah 4

It is Allah Who has created the heavens and the earth, and all between them, in six Days, and is firmly established on the Throne (of Authority): ye have none, besides Him, to protect or intercede (for you): will ye not then receive admonition?

  5. Ayah 5

He rules (all) affairs from the heavens to the earth: in the end will (all affairs) go up to Him, on a Day, the space whereof will be (as) a thousand years of your reckoning.

  6. Ayah 6

Such is He, the Knower of all things, hidden and open, the Exalted (in power), the Merciful;-

  7. Ayah 7

He Who has made everything which He has created most good: He began the creation of man with (nothing more than) clay,

  8. Ayah 8

And made his progeny from a quintessence of the nature of a fluid despised:

  9. Ayah 9

But He fashioned him in due proportion, and breathed into him something of His spirit. And He gave you (the faculties of) hearing and sight and feeling (and understanding): little thanks do ye give!

  10. Ayah 10

And they say: "What! when we lie, hidden and lost, in the earth, shall we indeed be in a Creation renewed? Nay, they deny the Meeting with their Lord.

  11. Ayah 11

Say: "The Angel of Death, put in charge of you, will (duly) take your souls: then shall ye be brought back to your Lord."

  12. Ayah 12

If only thou couldst see when the guilty ones will bend low their heads before their Lord, (saying:) "Our Lord! We have seen and we have heard: Now then send us back (to the world): we will work righteousness: for we do indeed (now) believe."

  13. Ayah 13

If We had so willed, We could certainly have brought every soul its true guidance: but the Word from Me will come true, "I will fill Hell with Jinns and men all together."

  14. Ayah 14

"Taste ye then - for ye forgot the Meeting of this Day of yours, and We too will forget you - taste ye the Penalty of Eternity for your (evil) deeds!"

  15. Ayah 15

Only those believe in Our Signs, who, when they are recited to them, fall down in prostration, and celebrate the praises of their Lord, nor are they (ever) puffed up with pride.

  16. Ayah 16

Their limbs do forsake their beds of sleep, the while they call on their Lord, in Fear and Hope: and they spend (in charity) out of the sustenance which We have bestowed on them.

  17. Ayah 17

Now no person knows what delights of the eye are kept hidden (in reserve) for them - as a reward for their (good) deeds.

  18. Ayah 18

Is then the man who believes no better than the man who is rebellious and wicked? Not equal are they.

  19. Ayah 19

For those who believe and do righteous deeds are Gardens as hospitable homes, for their (good) deeds.

  20. Ayah 20

As to those who are rebellious and wicked, their abode will be the Fire: every time they wish to get away therefrom, they will be forced thereinto, and it will be said to them: "Taste ye the Penalty of the Fire, the which ye were wont to reject as false."

  21. Ayah 21

And indeed We will make them taste of the Penalty of this (life) prior to the supreme Penalty, in order that they may (repent and) return.

  22. Ayah 22

And who does more wrong than one to whom are recited the Signs of his Lord, and who then turns away therefrom? Verily from those who transgress We shall exact (due) Retribution.

  23. Ayah 23

We did indeed aforetime give the Book to Moses: be not then in doubt of its reaching (thee): and We made it a guide to the Children of Israel.

  24. Ayah 24

And We appointed, from among them, leaders, giving guidance under Our command, so long as they persevered with patience and continued to have faith in Our Signs.

  25. Ayah 25

Verily thy Lord will judge between them on the Day of Judgment, in the matters wherein they differ (among themselves)

  26. Ayah 26

Does it not teach them a lesson, how many generations We destroyed before them, in whose dwellings they (now) go to and fro? Verily in that are Signs: Do they not then listen?

  27. Ayah 27

And do they not see that We do drive rain to parched soil (bare of herbage), and produce therewith crops, providing food for their cattle and themselves? Have they not the vision?

  28. Ayah 28

They say: "When will this decision be, if ye are telling the truth?"

  29. Ayah 29

Say: "On the Day of Decision, no profit will it be to Unbelievers if they (then) believe! nor will they be granted a respite."

  30. Ayah 30

So turn away from them, and wait: they too are waiting.

About the Quran

The Quran

The Quran is the holy scripture of Islam. Muslims believe that it is the literal word of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى), revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) over a period of 23 years. The Quran is composed of 114 Surahs (chapters) and contains 6,236 Ayat (verses). Muslim beliefs and practices are based on the Quran and the Sunnah, the teachings and example of the Prophet Muhammad

Meccan Surahs

The Meccan Surahs are the earliest revelations sent down to the Prophet Muhammad They were revealed in Mecca, hence their name. These revelations form the foundation of the Islamic faith and contain guidance for Muslims on how to live their lives. The Meccan Surahs are also notable for their poetic beauty and lyrical prose.

Medinan Surahs

The Medinan Surahs are the later Surahs that, according to Islamic tradition, were revealed in Medina after the Prophet Muhammad's (صلى الله عليه وسلم) hijra from Mecca. They were revealed by Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) when the Muslim community was larger and more developed, as opposed to their minority position in Mecca.
